Westhaven is home port for the YachtShare fleet and for thousands of Auckland boaties. Here's how to get there, what's on the docks, and how to head out onto the Waitematā safely.

Westhaven Marina is on the city side of the Waitematā Harbour, beside the southern end of the Auckland Harbour Bridge. The marina describes itself as the largest recreational marina in the Southern Hemisphere. It's home to around 1,800 recreational boats, with 1,573 berths plus charter berths and pile moorings.
Auckland Council owns the marina, and the council's Westhaven Marina team runs it day to day. Older pages may mention Eke Panuku. That organisation was folded into the council in 2025.
YachtShare has sailed from Westhaven since 1998, and our eight yachts and catamarans are berthed here.
You reach the marina by car along Westhaven Drive. Yellow parking spaces are for permit holders only, and cars without a permit can be ticketed or towed. Anyone can use the white spaces. They have time limits on weekdays but none in the evening, at weekends or on public holidays. Z Pier and the boat ramp have paid parking. Rules change, so always check the signs.
Without a car, the Westhaven Promenade is a shared walking and cycling path. It runs along the marina edge between the Harbour Bridge end and Wynyard Quarter, which is a short walk from the city centre. Several bus routes stop nearby. Use the Auckland Transport journey planner to find the best one.
Inside the marina, go no faster than 5 knots and make no wake. The entrance is at the eastern end. Coming in, piers A–J are to starboard and K–Z to port.
SeaLink ferries now run from Wynyard Point, just east of the entrance. When the warning lights show, hold off and stay at least 100 m clear.
The water around the Harbour Bridge is a Harbourmaster precautionary area. Ships, ferries and small craft all share it, so keep a sharp lookout. Big ships move faster than they look and can't stop quickly. They talk to Auckland Harbour Control on VHF 12, so listening there can give you useful warning.
Tide flows in and out of the harbour through the Rangitoto Channel, and the current is strongest at spring tides. Plan your sail around the tide where you can.
This is a summary only. Check the current Westhaven Marina rules and the Auckland Navigation Bylaw before you sail. The bylaw was under review in 2026.
A few hours tacking between the bridge and the city waterfront is good practice, with some of Auckland's best views.
Sail down to North Head, at the harbour entrance opposite Devonport. Have a look out to the Gulf, then come home on the tide.
DOC lists Islington Bay, between Rangitoto and Motutapu, as a safe anchorage. It's sheltered with good holding, but it's open to southerlies and gets busy on summer weekends.
YachtShare members also have a 24-hour support line. Our sailing courses can help you build confidence.
Westhaven's standard rate for 2026–27 for a 12 m monohull berth with a finger is about $1,209 a month including GST. That's for the berth alone, before insurance, maintenance or the boat itself.
YachtShare membership starts from $880 a month plus GST. It covers the berth, all maintenance including hull cleaning, valet cleaning and online booking. Compare owning with sharing or explore our membership options.
