Tutukaka is a small harbour north-east of Whangārei, between Ngunguru and Matapouri, and the main base for dive trips to the Poor Knights.

The passage

From Westhaven, head up the Rangitoto Channel, along the Whangaparāoa Peninsula, past Kawau and round Cape Rodney. Cross Bream Bay, pass Bream Head and carry on north. It is about 80 nm, or about 10 hours at 8 knots, so most crews break it at Kawau or Marsden Cove.

North of Cape Rodney is open-coast sailing with limited shelter. Choose a settled window, check the MetService marine forecasts for the Hauraki Gulf and Northland's east coast, and watch the swell as closely as the wind.

The entrance

The entrance is only about 0.1 nm wide, between the head and Red Rock. In strong easterlies, swell in the entrance can set boats onto Red Rock, so steer to the leading lights and don't drift towards it. The marina has added a starboard channel buoy on the outer approach to stop boats following the leads too close to the northern shore.

Inside, the marina asks vessels drawing more than 1.8 m to follow its tide guidance for the harbour channel around low tide. 'Zen', our Dufour 520, draws 2.2 m, so time your arrival on Zen to avoid low water. Whichever yacht you're on, check its draught and the tide before you come in.

The marina

  • Fuel: diesel and 95 petrol at the fuel jetty, available 24/7 by card or EFTPOS.
  • Amenities: showers and toilets, laundry, fresh water and shore power.
  • Waste: a free 24/7 sewage pump-out at the fuel jetty pontoon, plus recycling, rubbish and waste oil disposal.

To book a visitor berth, use the online form on the marina's website or phone 09 434 3441 (call if booking after 4.30pm or at weekends). The marina asks for insurance details and proof of a clean hull. Every YachtShare yacht is fully insured: a copy of the insurance documents is on board, or you can request one from our management team.

Nearby anchorages

Outer harbour: you can anchor south of Philip Island on a mud bottom. Pacific Bay is mostly moorings, and the northern cove has poor holding on gravel. In strong easterlies, the outer anchorages get a persistent swell, so take a marina berth instead.

The Poor Knights: about 12 nm offshore (about 1.5 hours each way at 8 knots), the islands make a superb day sail in settled weather. The marine reserve extends 800 m around the islands, and its rules are strict:

  • No fishing of any kind. Don't take or disturb any marine life, seaweed, rocks or shells.
  • No landing on the islands or rocks, and no tying boats to the shoreline.
  • Anchor responsibly and use the minimum chain needed to avoid damage.
  • Keep to 5 knots within 200 m of shore, near dive flags, and around other boats or swimmers.

Things to do ashore

  • Tutukaka Head lighthouse walk: a short walk out to the lighthouse on Kukutauwhao Island, with views to the Poor Knights. You cross a gut that fills with water, so go around low tide and not in rough conditions. The track starts on a private road, so respect residents' privacy.
  • Matapouri and Ngunguru: Matapouri has a horseshoe beach just up the coast, but the nearby Mermaid Pools have been closed under a rāhui since 2019. To the south, Ngunguru sits on its estuary behind a sandspit that is now a conservation reserve.
  • Diving: commercial dive and snorkel trips to the Poor Knights leave from Tutukaka.

Biosecurity and safety

  • Clean hull: Northland Regional Council allows no more than light fouling when you enter Northland or move between harbours and popular anchorages. Slime and barnacles are fine, but other growth must be limited to small patches under 5% of the hull. Northland marinas also ask for evidence of an antifoul in the last six months, or a lift-and-wash within a month of leaving a marine-pest area. YachtShare cleans hulls as part of scheduled maintenance, which helps meet these rules, but please check with us before you go.
  • Caulerpa: check biosecurity.govt.nz/caulerpa for current locations and controlled areas. Check your anchor, chain and gear for seaweed before moving on.
  • Pests: before leaving the Gulf, check the boat, dinghy and bags for rats, mice and other pests.
  • Safety: log a Coastguard trip report using the app, *500 or VHF, and close it on arrival. In an emergency, call Maritime Radio on VHF channel 16.

Suggested itinerary

  • Day 1: Westhaven to Kawau.
  • Day 2: Kawau to Marsden Cove, about 41 nm (about 5 hours at 8 knots).
  • Day 3: Marsden Cove to Tutukaka, about 23 nm (about 3 hours at 8 knots), then the lighthouse walk at low tide.
  • Day 4: a day sail to the Poor Knights if the weather is settled.
  • Day 5: home, about 80 nm (about 10 hours at 8 knots), or split the trip with a night on the way.

Or keep going: Cape Brett is around 30 nm north (about 4 hours at 8 knots), and then the Bay of Islands opens up. Bookings run from one to 14 days.

Which YachtShare yachts suit Tutukaka?

Tutukaka is within the fleet's survey limits under our Maritime NZ MOSS certification. The larger yachts are more comfortable on the open-coast legs: the Beneteau Oceanis 41 'Schonica', Dufour 412 'Incognito', Dufour 520 'Zen' or the Orana 44 catamaran 'The Bach'. The J/112e 'Oro Rosa' suits an experienced crew. Fuel is extra, and our 24-hour support line is always there. See the fleet, how it works, membership options and more sailing guides.

Planning note: distances and times are approximate, calculated at an average of 8 knots. Always check current charts, the marine forecast and local notices, including biosecurity and marine reserve rules, before you set out.
